We will float a 13 mile trip on the Illinois River
with Sparrow Hawk Floats
starting at around 10:00 AM
on Sunday. The trip will take 4-6 hours. There is an option of stopping
at the halfway point.
Cost is $12/person for canoes. Kayaks may be available. Inflatable rafts may be available but we don't recommend them. If you want a raft you should call Sparrow Hawk Camp, 1-800-722-9635, and make a reservation. You should bring a picnic lunch to eat along the river and plenty of beverages on ice. Food should be in water tight containers. There is a stiff fine for glass bottles. Styrofoam ice chests tend to break apart quicky (often on the bus ride to the launch point) so heavy duty coolers with latching lids are recommended. You should also bring bungee cords or something to secure things in your canoe. Old shoes that you can lace up or aqua sox are recommended, as thongs, flops and sandals will last seconds in the current. You'll need waterproof sunscreen, sunglasses with a cord (only as expensive as you're willing to lose), hat, koozie, fresh water, and a disposable underwater camera. Everything in your canoe will get wet. Even if you never tump, your fellow floaters will make sure that plenty of water flies around your canoe. If you are taking anything that must stay dry (like towels) you probably want to get a dry bag. These are sealing bags that can be tied in a canoe and are available in sporting goods stores like Oshman's. Fishing is allowed, but make sure you have a valid Oklahoma license. The river is heavily patrolled on holidays. Water guns are welcome during the float, but you should make sure that the water gun you bring is competitively sized.
